There are as many diets as there are people, well almost!
I am studying to be a health coach with the Health Coach Institute and a lot of their material has inspired this post. I saw a document that listed over 100 different diets! That is crazy. Essentially though you can sum them up in 10 minutes.
Here we go, to set the premise, your body, mind and soul (I like to add soul because this is the main “you”!) need 6 essential things
So no matter what diet you have been told about they will all assume these 6 elements. The only difference then is that each and every diet is just a reshuffling of the 6 elements, and more accurately the first 3 elements.
The reshuffle of macronutrients
Think about it the keto diet, what is it? Mostly fat and proteins with very little carbs, then you may have another diet that says something similar but suggests that you eat them at different intervals or timings. And then you get diets which change the type of element, like protein, for example, if you are on keto, then animal protein is fine however if you are vegan then you need plant protein, but essentially it’s still protein!
Why don’t diets work then?
So now that we know the difference between diets, let’s find out why they don’t really work, for the most part. I mean some people get results right!? But can they keep it up? I overheard a guy at a BBQ the other day saying that he has been on a diet for 4 years, but, I know I am judging here, his belly was pretty big.
I reckon that some people on diets are not consuming enough calories to support normal bodily functions. When this happens the body might store food as fat, this happens when you are not getting more calories than you are burning them – this may cause you to get hungry, I am sure you can relate to what I am saying.
Don’t lose muscle!
When you are dieting you may actually lose muscle! This is the opposite of what you need to do! Muscles actually burn energy, while fat cells mainly store energy. Fat cells also burn energy, but nowhere near as much as muscles do.
People who sit at a desk all day will need significantly fewer calories than a person doing manual labour, like a landscaper. The perfect diet for a very active landscaper will look a whole lot different than the diet for the office worker. The office worker could probably do with fewer carbs, while the landscape dude needs loads of carbs!
Your diet will change over time
Your diet needs to fit your lifestyle, its a way of eating, and as you get older your diet will change, your eating habits will change. My kids eat 6 times a day! I can get by with 3 and sometimes only 2 times a day. Sudhguru says that when you are over 30 years old you only need 2 meals a day and under 30 years old 3 or more times a day
What about getting a kettlebell for the home? It’s so versatile, plus you will need a good water bottle too! We will talk about water in our next blog. For home gym equipment and other accessories please check out Phoenix Fitness, who I also partner with and who sponsor some of my podcasts
